Mirza Abbas, 29 others acquitted in sabotage case

The case filed against BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas and Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu, including 29 others, on charges of sabotage at the capital’s Ramna Police Station a decade ago has been withdrawn. Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Wahiduzzaman ordered the withdrawal of the case on Monday (September 15) following the state’s application.

The court also acquitted Mirza Abbas and Barkatullah Bulu, including 29 others. Notable among the others who were acquitted are – BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku, BNP leader Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, former Chhatra Dal president Abdul Qadir Bhuiyan Jewel, General Secretary Habibur Rashid Habib, Jubo Dal Organizing Secretary Ishaq Sarkar, and Jubo Dal leader Hamidur Rahman Hamid.

The defendant’s lawyer, Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah, said that after the hearing, the court allowed the withdrawal of the case and acquitted everyone. Barkatullah Bulu was present in the court.

According to the case source, on March 2, 2013, BNP took out a protest march demanding a caretaker government in Shantinagar under Ramna police station. At that time, the protesters clashed with the police and Awami League leaders and activists. In this incident, the then sub-inspector of Ramna police station, Md. Ashfaq Rajib Hasan, filed a case against the BNP leaders and activists.
